Our Vision & Values

Designed to guide our community impact and align with our strategic grant partnerships.

Our Vision: To bring science awareness to the public, growing an inquisitive, resilient, and future-enabled society.

Our Core Values:
  • Equity & Accessibility: Breaking down barriers to STEM education for regional, low socio-economic, and under-represented communities to build a diverse future workforce.
  • Applied Problem Solving: Bridging the gap between theoretical science and society through hands-on engineering, prototyping, and systems thinking.
  • Community Resilience: Equipping youth and communities with the technological understanding required to adapt to environmental challenges, climate change, and disaster mitigation.
  • Collaborative Impact: Fostering strong, multidisciplinary connections between local industry, government bodies, educational institutions, and traditional custodians to create sustainable, scalable programs.

HISH unites organisations across the Hunter Region and beyond to collaboratively deliver world-leading events, activities, and competitions. As a registered charity supported by Inspiring Australia and the NSW Government, we engage students and the broader community in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) throughout the year.

Our Core Initiatives
  1. The Electric Vehicle Challenge: For over 15 years, HISH members have driven the EV Festivals for school students. This sustained initiative engages the next generation in designing, building, and racing solar and electric vehicles, promoting practical engineering, sustainable energy, and applied problem-solving.                                                                                             Want you own car kit?  www.kitesite.com.au/schools/solarcars/solarcar_kit.html                                                                                Want to race?  www.careerlinks.nsw.edu.au/ev/
  2. National Science Week (Hunter Science Festival): Our premier annual event brings hands-on STEM and STEAM activities directly to the public. Hosted at the Newcastle Museum, this record-breaking, free celebration draws over 9,000 participants. It is the Australia's largest single-day science event, packed with community STEM workshops, robotics, and interactive exhibits.
  3. Industry & Government Connections: We support the connection between local industries, government bodies, and scientists through targeted local grants. We facilitate expert lectures and community events that actively engage the public with real-world scientific applications.
  4. Preparing for Industry 5.0 (SSSS Initiative): Supported by the Commonwealth Government's Emerging Priorities Program, we deliver national Professional Development and student workshops. This cradle-to-career initiative develops critical skills in Statistics, Sustainability, Systems thinking, and STEM (SSSS).
  5. Fire-Ed Up: Funded by the NSW Office of the Chief Scientist and Engineer, this program explores the science of bushfires. By integrating traditional practices and natural processes, we reengage the community with science, mitigation strategies, and the vital role of environmental management.

Empowering the Next Generation We still have the fire in the belly to inspire youth, giving them the problem-solving skills and resilience for the STEM choices they will make, now and in the future
