Professor Scott Sleap stands in front of a wooden-paneled wall featuring large, colorful letters that spell out
I am an individual member of the Hunter Innovation and Science Hub (HISH) and a former office bearer. I’ve been involved with HISH since its establishment and continue to support its mission to promote science, innovation, and collaboration throughout the Hunter region.
I currently serve as the STEM Enrichment Coordinator for the NSW Department of Education, where I lead the STEM Industry School Partnerships (SISP) program and the NSW Virtual STEM Academy. I am also a Professor of Practice – STEM at the University of Sydney and an Honorary Professor at the University of Newcastle. My work focuses on strengthening connections between education, industry, and research to deliver real-world STEM learning opportunities for students and educators.

How does your group link to STEM?
My background is in engineering and STEM education, and I’ve dedicated my career to expanding access to high-quality STEM programs, especially in regional and remote communities. I’ve developed and led programs that support teachers, engage students in real-world STEM challenges, and build partnerships with industry. Through the work I do, I aim to inspire the next generation of problem solvers and critical thinkers.

Why did your organisation decide to become a member of HISH?
I chose to become a member of HISH because of my long association with the organisation and my deep belief in its value. As a former office bearer, I’ve witnessed the meaningful impact HISH has had on our community, bringing together schools, universities, businesses, and the public to celebrate and explore science and innovation. It’s a vibrant and important part of the region, and I’m proud to continue supporting its work.
