The Bingage logo features a stylized recycling symbol made of three blue arrows forming a triangle on the left. To the right, bold white text reads
Bingage is a smart recycling program conducting a behavioural study on the gamifacation of recycling on student living at the University of Newcastle
Bingage is a student-led sustainability initiative based at the University of Newcastle, focused on improving recycling behavior through behavioral science and smart technology. The project integrates gamified recycling stations, brand-specific engagement strategies, and closed-loop data collection to drive measurable environmental outcomes. Designed as both a behavioral study and engagement platform, Bingage partners with academics, university departments, and government collaborators to test scalable models for circular economy impact on campus. The initiative is currently developing a pilot program within student accommodation, combining waste capture, reward incentives, and data insights to inform future infrastructure and policy decisions.
How does your group link to STEM?
Binfluence integrates multiple STEM disciplines to drive environmental innovation and behavior change:
  • Science – We apply behavioral science to study recycling habits, motivations, and cognitive triggers for sustainable action.
  • Technology – Our smart bin infrastructure uses sensor-based tracking, QR codes, and data dashboards to capture and analyze real-time waste data.
  • Engineering – The system supports circular design by converting collected plastic into usable campus infrastructure through materials engineering.
  • Mathematics – Data modeling and statistical analysis are used to measure recycling rates, engagement metrics, and impact against sustainability targets.
By combining these STEM elements, Binfluence creates an evidence-based, tech-enabled solution to improve campus recycling and reduce environmental impact.

Why did your organisation decide to become a member of HISH?
The main motivator was to be able to access public liability insurance as part of the membership to be able to accept funding from Newcastle City Council Youth Climate Action to execute on our pilot project plans. Adamstown 2289
