HISH & Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal

HISH at the 2026 Singleton Show: Empowering the Next Generation of Engineers

This weekend, the Hunter Innovation and Science Hub (HISH) brought hands-on STEM education to the 2026 Singleton Show, made possible by a Community Led Climate Solutions grant from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR) and supported by AiSTEM and CLEANaS.

Community Led Climate Solutions

We extend our gratitude to Elders Insurance, backed by QBE Foundation, for funding the solar kits and supporting STEM innovation in the Hunter Valley.

Hands-On Solar Engineering

We successfully deployed our custom zero-waste solar robotics kits, inviting regional youth and their parents to engage directly with renewable energy technology. Participants tested the solar cars on our custom-built race track, mastering the mechanics of solar power. Once comfortable with the baseline technology, students were challenged to modify and optimise their vehicles for better performance, demonstrating high-level engineering and problem-solving skills in real time.

Building Strong Regional Connections

A major focus of the weekend was integrating STEM education with established community networks. After setting up on Friday evening, our team spent Saturday engaging with local leaders, industry, and stallholders:
  • Northern Agricultural Association (NAA): We collaborated closely with the NAA Ladies Committee and engaged directly with regional stallholders to learn about and support their businesses.
  • Industry Engagement: We established valuable connections with Glencore, the primary show sponsor, as well as BHP, to discuss the critical role of grassroots STEM initiatives in the Hunter Valley.
  • Singleton Library STEM Club: We worked closely with the Singleton Library's STEM club and are excited to be supplying them with our custom solar car kits to continue the learning beyond the showground.
  • Singleton Woodworkers Club: Bridging traditional craftsmanship with modern fabrication, we provided the club with several solar cars and invited them to use their laser cutting equipment to design and manufacture custom car bodies.

Looking Ahead

The enthusiasm on the race track has already set the stage for our next major initiative. We have begun mapping out a dedicated student solar car event tailored specifically for the Friday of the 2027 Singleton Show, ensuring even greater access to high-quality, sustainable STEM opportunities for rural and regional students.
